How You Can Help

Volunteer!
Nearly all work carried out by the squad is done by volunteers. We have a number of rewarding volunteer opportunities available.

Driver Opportunities
Being an Ambulance squad Volunteer Driver is a very rewarding experience. It allows you to work directly with our passengers, providing them with the vital transportation to and from their residence to obtain medical treatment. Our Squad is the only means for transportation available to many of these people.

Our drivers contribute one day per week. Our trips are scheduled between the hours of 8:30 am and 3:00 pm. No special driver's license or other credential is required.

Vehicle Cleaning and Upkeep
Naturally, after a busy week on the road, our vehicles require periodic cleaning and maintenance. Thus a volunteer group meets each Saturday morning to wash and detail the cars and vans, and perform simple maintenance tasks. This work is generally scheduled from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon.

Professional and/or Skilled Services
The Squad has periodic need for building maintenance work including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, etc. The organization also requires the help of accounting and legal professionals.

If you are qualified, licensed, and insured in any of these, or related areas, please consider donating some of your time to the Squad. Your help will allow us to continue our mission of service in the most efficient way possible.

Also, our vehicles require periodic skilled maintenance. That work must be done at a professional, off-site facility. If you own or manage such a facility, any concession or contribution you may be able to make would greatly assist our cause.

Come Ride with Us
If you are considering a volunteer opportunity, we invite you to experience firsthand how we serve the community. Call April, our administrator, to schedule a half day visit. You will have the opportunity to see our facility, meet our drivers and staff and ride along in one of our vehicles to experience the rewards of serving the transportation needs of our passengers. How We Use Your Money
We are able to pay for the cost of providing our services, and to purchase new vehicles through the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations in Indian River County. Volunteers contribute over 15,000 hours annually which helps keep our expenses low. 100% of every dollar we spend goes directly to serving our riders.

Operating Costs
The Squad’s largest burden is its day to day operating cost. We provide approximately 13,000 free trips annually. To provide these trips we have 10 vehicles on the road every day, driving over 140,000 miles and consuming 8,000 gallons of gasoline each year.  Please consider funding one of our many operating expenses.  For example:

  • $200 will provide fuel for one vehicle for one month.
  • $125 will pay for one new tire.
  • $30 will pay for one routine oil and filter service for one vehicle.
  • $24 will pay for one passenger round trip to the doctor.
